I wish to apologize for the problem of the incorrect change. As
so concisely pointed out, there are an infinitesimal number of answers.

This then, is the correct form of the problem:

"You cash your check for x dollars and y cents, buy coffee for
3.50, and recieve y dollars and x cents in change. What was the amount
of your check?"

Thus (my progress);

(x+y/100)-350 = y + x/100
