Ron - I am reminded of a quote I have heard attributed to Amelia Earhart:

"Courage is the price that life extracts for granting peace. The soul that
knows it not, knows no relief."

So at least that is an excuse (of sorts). And, of course, this is what the
NCTM's Professional Standards are supposed to address. (Personal note: I
left a tenured position to move to Texas, so I am aware of these pressures,
but I need to follow my gut feelings on this and if some students give me
low evaluations, that's a risk I have to take.) It's the TENURED faculty
that don't take such risks that bother me (here I am speaking as a former
deparment chair.)
