Good examples of portfolio/authentic assessment?

A friend in the Japanese education hierarchy will be in the U.S. about the
3rd week in September. Japan is now very interested in portfolio
assessment or authentic assessment, and he has been assigned to visit some
good sites.

If you know of any you would recommend, please let me know. He had hoped
to find some in California(!) and Missouri.
