Hello everyone,

I just wanted to let everyone know that our multimedia based course in
Statistics on CD-ROM described below is now shipping. The cost is $49.95. It can
be purchased by calling 1-800-247-6553 or 1-800-843-9497. You can also order by
check sent to:

HighText Interactive
5665 Oberlin Drive, Suite 202
Solana Beach, CA 92121

Larry Peterson ( was kind enough to review the course in
depth during our beta testing phase. He might provide independent evaluation to
anyone who knows Larry.

Following message was posted to the list on 4/30/96:

I am the lead developer of an interactive statistics tutorial that HighText
Interactive and Jandel Scientific are jointly developing. Al Coons came by our
booth at THE NCTM NATIONAL CONVENTION and after seeing a demonstration of the
tutorial, kindly invited me to attend the AP Statistics meeting and told me
about this listserv. We passed out preliminary material to the attendees at Al's
meeting that describes the course. I thought others who were unable to attend
the meeting or the conference might be interested in a brief description of our
course. If you desire further information, please send me an e-mail.

Our course is designed for anyone desiring a first "serious" course in
statistics. There are seven units (a detailed lesson plan for each unit is
available, please e-mail your mailing address) which cover:

1. Basics
2. Probability Distributions
3. Sampling and Estimation
4. Testing Hypotheses
5. Chi-square and ANOVA
6. Correlation and Regression
7. Nonparametric Methods

The course is a complete self-teaching tutorial requiring only an Algebra II
mathematics level. It is highly interactive, containing numerous computer-aided
interactive statistics experiments, ranging from coin flipping/dice tossing to
an interactive simulation that lets the user verify the sampling means
distribution theory. The course also contains numerous animations, calculators
for z, t, chi-square and F statistics, and is fully narrated.

Tightly integrated into the tutorial is a nearly full working version of Jandel
Scientific's SigmaStat, a $495 statistical software analysis and graphing
package. Digital video tutorials on how to use the software and how to apply the
software to solving practical problems are contained in the tutorial in a Show
and Try format. SigmaStat can be launched from within the tutorial and used to
solve problems as they are presented in the tutorial.

The tutorial has built in internet access for registered owners to private Web
page sites at HighText Interactive and Jandel Scientific. We intend to provide
teachers and students with the ability to ask statistics experts at Jandel and
HighText for help with problems.

The course will be available in June 1996 at a single copy introductory price of
only $49.95. The first version will only be available for Windows95 and Windows
3.1 computers equipped with 8 megs of ram, operating under Windows95, or 16 megs
of ram if operating under Windows 3.1. A sound card and a CD drive is required.
Multiple copy and site license pricing will be available at time of release.
