In this morning's paper there was a Reuters article about the possible
decline in confidence of flying by airline passengers due to all the recent
crashes.

David Learmount, air safety editor at Flight International magazine is quoted:

Learmount, who compiles an annual list of the world's air disasters, said
although around 1900 people had died so far this year, 1996 was likely to be
an unfortunate aberration.

"Around 1000 passengers a year die on average," he said. "Given that 1.5
billion people travel a year by air, it's not that desparate.

"It will be much safer after this year. In order for the overall trend to
continue, next year there will have to be a lower than average number of
accidents."
