It has been interesting to read the strong feelings that many of us have after Josh's innocent question.
One point that all of us should keep in mind is that all students taking the AP stats exam will be given a sheet with all the formulas on it as noted in the Course Description. This is the same information that most students would likely enter into their calculators as notes. Since all students have the same access to the information, the complaints about who has the advantage are somewhat moot.
There is no question we all want our students to be ethical. I'm sure the Test Development Committee has spent hours discussing these same concerns. I have confidence in their ability to recognize the problem and to write a test that measures the student's abilities and knowledge rather than the capacity of their hardware.
