Two-tailed tests

A question came up in my class about changing a two-tailed test to a
one-test test to make it more convincing after the data has been collected.
It seems somewhat unethical to me if one is really in a two-tailed
situation (looking for a difference rather than an increase or decrease),
but I wondered if this is done in practice. Could someone who knows more
about current statistical practices help me out? Thanks.
