Is there any way to make the activexserver command grab a currently open excel session?

If i use the typical:

excel = actxserver('Excel.Application');
excel.Visible=1;
file = excel.Workbooks.Open(filename);

it opens a new file each time. I would like the worksheet to remain open for user interaction and just have the activexserver update various values intermittently.

I used to do this with ddeinit, ddepoke, ddereq but these commands are no longer officially supported in matlab, so i would like to do this with the activexserver instead.

Thanks

Tom
