Difference among "Journal","Transaction" and "Proceeding"

This may be out of the discussion scope of this forum, but I think community here can answer this question.

What are the differences among "Journal, "Transaction" and "Proceeding"?

If I am a researcher (e.g. in bioinformatic field) and have observed some interesting statistics during my experiments, how should I decide to which kind of publications I shall post my papers?
