How to read TIFF images that are MM (big endian) format

Someone gave me 2 byte tiff image files that are not the usual II-
style tiff images. (If you open a tiff image with a text editor you
will probably see that the first two characters are II). The "magic
number" (which is the first two bytes of the file) specify the byte
order. It is either II for litle endian or MM for big endian.

Ref:
http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc3302.html
Magic number(s):
II (little-endian): 49 49 2A 00 hex
MM (big-endian): 4D 4D 00 2A hex

The images I was given are MM. Evidently neither the imread()
function nor the Tiff() object (two built-in MATLAB routines) can read
these files. A search of the internet and File Exchange for MATLAB
code to read this type of tiff file turned up nothing. Does anyone
know how I can read them?
Thanks,
ImageAnalyst
