MathematicsNCLB Title IIB Mathematics and Science Partnerships Grant 2010-2013 The New York State Education Department administers this competitive grant program intended to increase academic achievement of students in mathematics and science by enhancing the content knowledge and teaching skills of classroom teachers. Partnerships between high-need school districts and the science, technology, engineering, and/or mathematics (STEM) departments in institutions of higher education are at the core of these improvement efforts. ------------------------------ US Department of Defense to Award SMART Scholarships
The USDOD's Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship program's overarching goal is promoting the education, recruitment, and retention of outstanding undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in STEM disciplines. 300 scholarships are expected to be awarded this year worth a total of $45 million. Applications must be received by December 15, 2009. This resource identifies professional development needs specific to mathematics. It includes a series of guiding questions that help districts evaluate their existing programs and identify professional development activities that meet their needs. ------------------------------ NCTM Releases New Mathematics PublicationThe National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), has released a new publication, "Focus in High School Mathematics: Reasoning and Sense Making." The document suggests practical changes to the high school mathematics curriculum to refocus learning on reasoning and sense making. This shift is not a minor refinement but constitutes a substantial rethinking of the high school math curriculum. NCTM's new publication urges grounding all students in mathematics that connects them with real-world situations. According to NCTM, the more each mathematics lesson builds on the previous lesson and each year's math experience builds on the previous year's, the more students will be able to learn and retain as they progress from prekindergarten through college. Focusing on reasoning and sense making has the potential to streamline the curriculum and make it more powerful and effective. "Focus in High School Mathematics: Reasoning and Sense Making" is a conceptual framework to guide the development of future publications and tools related to 9-12 mathematics curriculum and instruction. The document highlights reasoning opportunities in five specific content areas of the high school mathematics curriculum: Reasoning with Numbers and Measurements, Reasoning with Algebraic Symbols, Reasoning with Functions, Reasoning with Geometry, and Reasoning with Statistics and Probability. As a consequence, the 2009-10 Elementary- and Intermediate-level testing schedule has undergone several changes. Cohort 2006 Section of Regents Diploma Requirements for Math The section for the cohort of 2006 within the Regents Diploma Requirements for Mathematics chart has been updated. This cohort has been combined with 2007 to reflect the current implementation of the Mathematics Core Curriculum (Revised 2005) and the administration of the Regents Examinations in Mathematics. In order to fulfill the mathematics portion of a Regents Diploma, students must earn three units of commencement-level mathematics credit and pass one Regents examination in mathematics.
