THE MATH BEHIND MOVIE SPECIAL EFFECTS

http://www.ams.org/notices/201005/

The May issue of the Notices of the American Mathematical
Society includes a PDF article (1.3M) entitled "Crashing Waves,
Awesome Explosions, Turbulent Smoke, and Beyond: Applied
Mathematics and Scientific Computing in the Visual Effects
Industry." The article was written by three mathematicians from
the University of California, Los Angeles who have made
significant contributions to research in this area: Aleka
McAdams, Stanley Osher, and Joseph Teran.

Other features this month include "Origami and Partial
Differential Equations", "Localized Eigenfunctions: Here You
See Them, There You Don't", and "What Is Mathematics For?" by
Underwood Dudley.
