DEVELOPING FUNCTION SENSE WITH SAQS

Judah Schwartz presents this work in progress, an online
book on the philosophy of teaching functions in middle and
high school algebra. He has come to believe "that approaching
algebra through the study of functions using symbolic and
graphical representations simultaneously and in parallel from
the outset is a pedagogically powerful teaching and learning
strategy."

The book is meant as shareware. If you find it of use to you,
Schwartz asks that you send him a multiple of pi dollars.

PERSPECTIVE SOLIDS

Paul Kunkel has updated his tools for constructing 3D
perspective views of polyhedra for Sketchpad 5, including new
tools and capabilities. Rotate to view the constructions from
any angle, or view the inside of a solid by omitting one face.
The constructions may also be exported to HTML.

Kunkel recommends that new users of these tools start with
the manual:

HPM WEST COAST MEETING

The Americas Section of History and Pedagogy of Mathematics
(HPM) is having a West Coast meeting, October 23-24, on the
campus of CalTech in Pasadena, CA.

HPM is seeking abstracts for 30-40 minute talks on the history
of mathematics, the teaching of mathematics, and the history of
teaching mathematics, especially those directly relevant to
mathematics classrooms. Submission deadline is September 15.
