MOVING STUDENTS FROM ARITHMETIC TO ALGEBRA
...ONE STEP AT A TIME

http://mathforum.org/pd/movingstudents/

Register now for this two-week intensive professional
development course with the Math Forum, which runs July 29 -
August 13.

In this course we will examine a continuum of student work from
the Math Forum's Problems of the Week archive. Selected work
will include a range of examples from "not knowing how to
start" to "It's perfect. What could I possibly say to her?" We
will consider specific ways to move students' thinking along
this continuum.

A PoW membership is not required for this course. However, you
can save $79 off the cost of the course if you choose to
purchase or renew a PoW Class membership by July 31st.

DAVID BLACKWELL, 1919-2010

http://www.berkeley.edu/news/media/releases/2010/07/15_blackwell.shtml

Statistician David Harold Blackwell died Thursday, July 8. He
was the first tenured black professor at UC Berkeley, and
contributed to many fields beyond statistics, such as
probability theory, game theory and information theory. Known
as a passionate teacher, Blackwell also influenced the field of
engineering, independently inventing dynamic programming and
developing the theorem of renewal.

The resources listed at the end of the above page are worth
exploring, especially the interview excerpts from the National
Visionary Leadership Project:

http://www.visionaryproject.com/blackwelldavid/

In these videos, Blackwell speaks candidly about his family
background, the racial segregation he faced, the teachers who
inspired him, his career in general and at specific
institutions, the rising numbers of black mathematicians, and
his advice for African American youth.

CONCEPTUA MATH

http://www.conceptuamath.com/

Conceptua Math is a commercial company offering software and
professional development for mathematics education. Two
segments of its site are currently available for free:
Fractions Tools, which consist of problems and standards-
aligned lessons on fractions; and accompanying Student
Activities, which offer teachers support in real-time and give
students feedback dynamically.

Sample these resources before the end of summer; by autumn, the
Student Activities will require payment for access.
