John Kelly makes a strong case for AP Calculus. Many of the students I have taught over the last 22 years have been well served by taking calculus in high school. However, because of the nature of the monlolithic beast, the AP syllabus can be both stimulating and frustrating. National standards, or even local standards, can serve as a strait jacket when applied to a particular class. It can be frustrating not to be able to explore various topics in some depth because of the pressur to cover the syllablus. This frustration is not particular to AP calc, obviously.
