Dear List Subscriber,
If you want to discuss the operation of this list or the nature of my following remarks, PLEASE RESPOND DIRECTLY TO ME AND NOT TO THE LIST.
I have been away from reading the messages for about 3-4 days. When I left there seemed to be some reasonable discussion on the topic of AP calculus... a topic that is not new to this list, but which has been of recent interest to the calculus programs at the college level because of the great increase in the use of AP calculus by high school students across the USA. How these students are treated when they arrive at college is an important topic which is certainly worthy of a place on the subject line for this list and one for which I believe there is much of value still to be presented and discussed by list members.
As owner of this list I consider it part of my responsiblility to the subscribers to maintain discussion at a level appropriate for this list as it is defined. Usually when I see unproductive and/or unprofessional discussion happenning I try to cut it off with personal off-list messages (as owner of the list) written to those who are on an errant track. It appears that in my absence during the last few days certain participants in the AP Calculus discussion have let themselves digress to topics and a tone that is not appropriate.
So, if this digression is something that you have felt offended by, I apologize for not being around to cut it off sooner.
And, If you are one of the participants in this discussion who has been sidetracked, please either return to a discussion of the mathematics and the learning issues or remove this list from your addresses for these messages which are not appropriate for this list.
It is my intention to keep the list open, uncensored, and not pre-screened as a forum to discuss legitimate educational and mathematical issues related to calculus reform. I feel confident that those who use this list are capable of engaging in responsible and professional discussion and debate without requiring others to intervene as the recent postings have suggested.
If you want to discuss the operation of this list or the nature of my remarks, PLEASE RESPOND DIRECTLY TO ME AND NOT TO THE LIST. Let's keep the list use for its defined purpose and not for other distracting issues - such as this posting itself, which I send only because as owner I feel obliged to make this comment.
Sincerely, Martin Flashman owner,Calc-reform@e-math.ams.org
