TIMSS VIDEOS: TEXT OF LESSON TRANSCRIPTS NOW AVAILABLE
http://timssvideo.com/
timssvideo.com has recently rolled out a new feature to fulfill the request most commonly received by the two month-old site: the ability to download lesson transcripts in text format.
This zip file lets you download all math transcripts, compressed in one 326k burst:
http://timssvideo.com/sites/default/files/Math%20transcripts%20as%20txt%20files.zip
Each line of transcript includes time code, speaker, and text, separated by tabs.
Complete the free registration to access the actual video lessons from the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), as featured in these pages this past February. The 28 full-length videos of eighth-grade mathematics lessons hail from Australia, the Czech Republic, Hong Kong, Japan, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and the United States.
The team led by UCLA's Jim Stigler welcomes further feedback posted to the site's discussion forum about what would improve its usefulness and how you will use the video lessons.
timssvideo.com is a project of UCLA and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. It is funded by a grant from The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.

Now taking place: math education conversation of the hour
"I just want to remind folks that a simple conversion of a score makes an assumption that IF the student had been doing the test under a non correction for guessing direction, they would have responded exactly the same way. This assumes that the strategy one would use given advice about how to respond IF a formula were used AND if it were not used ... are the same. If students really take the correction for guessing directions to heart, then the strategies under both conditions should not be the same."

MICROSOFT'S FREE MATH SOFTWARE
http://www.microsoft.com/education/teachers/guides/mathematics_4.0.aspx
Microsoft has released a new version of its math education software -- and for the first time, it's free.
Microsoft Mathematics 4.0, for students in middle school, high school, and early college, shows how to solve equations while bolstering understanding of fundamental math concepts.
It features built-in Ink Handwriting Support, which lets you hand-write math problems and equations in a worksheet area on a tablet or ultra-mobile PCs for immediate solving or later work. The software also includes a graphing calculator capable of plotting in 2D and 3D, a movie editor, a library of formulas and equations, a triangle solver, and more.
