GENE KLOTZ RECEIVES NCTM LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
http://mathforum.org/workshops/nctm2011/gene.html
Gene Klotz, founder of the Math Forum, was honored last Friday with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Lifetime Achievement Award for Distinguished Service to Mathematics Education.
Twenty years ago, Klotz wrote the grant that launched the Geometry Forum, which later became the Math Forum @ Drexel. Prior to that, he helped to develop The Geometer's Sketchpad, one of the most widely used software programs in school mathematics.

PoW taking place: math problem-solving moment of the week
"I agree that students have much more difficulty with word problems than with straightforward computational problems. In NYC, we have targeted problem solving standards in the curriculum. As a result of taking this Financial Education course, I have begun to use many of the Math Forum problem solving strategies with my students on a regular basis. I have seen even the most reticent students begin to volunteer answers. Each day I see that spending even just a little time during class on problem solving really makes a big difference." - Julie, posted to a participant in the Math Forum course "Financial Education in the Math Classroom"

Now taking place: math education conversation of the hour
"Our students feel that their choice of math class is a personal statement, a reflection of who they are intellectually. By making them ask their own questions and write up and present their work, we force the students to put themselves in the work. The trouble has been resources. I have found lots of good books, but nothing really, really great...."
