Are there any advantages to calculating an "average" with a weighted numerator and unweighted denominator?

For a specific example, see how the Official World Golf Rankings multiply each event by a time weighting and then divide by total events played to get an "average" points per event for each player. http://www.officialworldgolfranking.com/about_us/default.sps?iType=425
