Ignite event at the annual meeting of the National Council of
Teachers of Mathematics. Each speaker had 5 minutes to "talk

WINNERS OF THE 2011 USA MATHEMATICAL OLYMPIAD

Earlier this week, the Mathematical Association of America
(MAA) announced the 2011 winners of the United States of
America Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO).

These 12 outstanding high school math students will attend an
awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., then travel to Lincoln,
Nebraska, to participate in the Mathematical Olympiad Summer
Program (MOSP). After in-depth training in mathematical problem
solving there, they will vie to represent the U.S. at the 2011
International Mathematical Olympiad, held in Amsterdam, The
Netherlands, July 16-24.

The MAA American Mathematics Competitions website offers

- the six-question exam tackled by this year's winners
- a reading list to prepare your students to participate in
future olympiads
- information about the Edyth May Sliffe Awards for
Distinguished High School Mathematics Teaching
- USAMO resources in French
- details about all of the MAA's competitions, including the
USA Junior Mathematical Olympiad (USAJMO), which bridges
the computational focus of the American Invitational
Mathematics Examination (AIME) and the proof orientation of
the USAMO

Now taking place: math education conversation of the hour

"Being an Advanced Placement reader is very desirable, I was
told. Being a reader will make you a better teacher, I was
told. Now, I heard that from numerous AP teachers, and I
accepted it on faith, but it wasn't until after last year's
reading that I really understood it. I came away from last
year's reading with a better understanding of how and why
questions are created for the exam, a better understanding of
just what is being tested, and, most importantly, a much
better understanding of how students understand, or
misunderstand, calculus. This all has had impact on how I
teach, and I'm grateful for it."

TIMSS VIDEOS: BOOKMARKING NOW AVAILABLE

timssvideo.com has rolled out another new feature: the ability
to mark the beginning and end of a video clip, as well as
annotate it. When viewing a video lesson, just look under the
video window for a button labelled "Create Bookmark."

After you create a bookmark, it appears on the right, in a new
tab called Bookmarks, which organizes all your bookmarks for
that lesson. Click on a bookmark's Play button to play just the
video segment.

Complete the free registration to access these video lessons
from the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study
(TIMSS). The 28 full-length videos of eighth-grade mathematics
lessons hail from Australia, the Czech Republic, Hong Kong,
Japan, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and the United States.

for the Advancement of Teaching. It is funded by a grant from
