Standard Deviation-- getting the kids their quickly

Hello TinkerPlotters and Fathomers,
Here is the problem. I am working with IB Math Studies Year 2 students and I need to get them to understand standard deviation and quickly.
They are motivated kids, but math does not come easy for them (Math Studies is the lowest of the three levels of math offered in the IB program). Also, as is too often the case, they have had very little statistics work through the years. We have tackled a good chunk of probability using CPM's materials from Algebra Connections and Geometry Connections. At the moment I am adapting IMP's "Is there really a difference?" unit for them because we also have to get Chi Squared. It is a great unit but it assumes that they have had previous work with standard deviation. They haven't. Suggestions?
Thanks
