symbolic dynamics

I am a beginner in natural language processing/cognitive learning. I am trying to figure out how to convert the system dynamics into formal language into an automated process, but I am not aware of the software platform and how to go about it.
The system dynamics would be represented in symbols, say the dynamics of robot navigation. Symbolic dynamics is used to extend the traditional pattern matching techniques to measure the distances between feature vectors of an observed object and a set of stored exemplars.
So, I am trying to work on behavior recognition using symbolic dynamics and compare it with bayesian and neural networks. The automaton should display the current state of the robot's behavior, symbol and time of each event and the time of each string rejection.
I want to know how this is done, the programming tool and some examples maybe. Thank you
