PoW taking place: math problem-solving moment of the week
"I got a bit stuck when trying to find all the different routes but that was only because I was a bit rusty on how to find all the combinations. I have definitely answered problems like this previously, especially in MCAS (the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System). I knew first off that I needed to multiply something to find the answer but at first I wasn't sure what...." - Rachel, highlighted in the Pre-Algebra PoW's Latest Solution

Now taking place: math education conversation of the hour
"Good problems spur good discussions. 1973 AB Calculus Exam question #23 provides such discussion. We have started to call some of these problems 'stealth' problems because some of the parts are missing or don't appear in function form.... I would love to hear about other favorite DQ problems (definition of a derivative) as well."

REEL MATH VIDEO CONTEST VOTING HAS BEGUN
http://video.reelmath.org/home.aspx
The video contest run by MATHCOUNTS has opened to public voting. Come check out the clips, each of which runs less than five minutes.
US resident in grades six through eight can still enter the contest, which challenges students to create a video that uses a real-world application to teach the math concept in a problem of their choosing from the 2011-12 MATHCOUNTS School Handbook, freely available for download here:
