MATHCOUNTS COMPETITION AND CLUB PROGRAMS

Since 1983, the MATHCOUNTS Competition has promoted mathematics
achievement through a series of engaging "bee" style contests.
The deadline to register your middle schoolers for the 2011-12
competition is Friday, 16 December. Fees for this national
coaching and competitive program start at $10 for a
Title I student.
MATHCOUNTS also offers a free club program, which provides
schools with the structure and activities to hold regular
meetings of a math club. Depending on the level of student and
teacher involvement, a school may receive a recognition plaque
or banner, and enter a drawing for prizes.

Both the competition and club programs welcome sixth, seventh
or eighth grade students in any public, private, religious and
home schools in the 50 states plus U.S. territories and the
Department of Defense and State Department schools.

high school and this electronic discussion group serves as a

SUMDOG CONTESTS

This fall, Scottish educational software creators Sumdog ran 62
math contests across the U.S. for students in grades K-8. Over
100,000 students actively participated, answering 76 million
math questions in the process.
Now, in the run-up to Christmas, Sumdog have launched a series
of local and statewide math contests across the country. Each
day between Monday, 5 December, and Thursday, 15 December, they
will give away a $330 math software package.
Sumdog's student activities and teacher logins are free. You
only need to pay anything if you want to take advantage of
additional reporting tools.
Sumdog's free games, most of them multiplayer, cover over 120
numeracy skills, split into 10 levels. If you don't already
