This course will develop candidates? knowledge of middle grades (5-9) literacy development and effective instructional practices for the middle grades mathematics classroom. Central issues related to mathematical literacy and language, namely vocabulary, symbolism, and graphing will be covered. Emphasis will be placed on developing multiple literacies across different sign systems (words, symbols, and graphic representations) to foster mathematical literacy.
