PNC CHRISTMAS PRICE INDEX

For the past 28 years, PNC Wealth Management has illustrated
the cost of all the gifts involved in the song "The Twelve
Days of Christmas."
This year, PNC has created a website that takes children on a
model train journey through a winter wonderland setting.
Along the way, interactive gifts help present concepts such as
inflation and other economic trends.

"Then, after looking closer at the illustration, I realized
that the bottom section of the tree, the point from the trunk
to the tip of the fallen half, and the fallen upper half all
made a triangle, and the first words out of my mouth were 'I
have no idea how to do this.' I asked my parents and they said,
'Easy, use the Pythagorean Theorem.' With renewed vigor, I set
about attempting to solve the equation until I had the epiphany
that I barely know algebra. My first muddling of the
equation was...."

"I was unable to come up with a counterexample when my students
asked. It doesn't seem like statement III has to be true, but I
can't think of a situation where I and II are, but III isn't.

RESULTS OF 2011 MATHEMATICS TRIAL URBAN DISTRICT ASSESSMENT

Join the National Assessment Governing Board (NAGB) on
Wednesday, 7 December, at 10 AM (ET) for a live webinar
release of the 2011 Mathematics Trial Urban District
Assessment (TUDA) at Grades 4 and 8.
The results for each of the 21 cities participating in TUDA
will include comparisons to large cities and the nation, and
achievement gap data by racial/ethnic group, income level, and
gender. These results expand on recently released National
Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) data showing the
highest average mathematics scores to date, mixed results for
reading achievement, and states' progress in closing
achievement gaps.
The districts that participated are:
- Albuquerque Public Schools
- Atlanta Public Schools
- Austin Independent School District
- Baltimore City Public Schools
- Boston School District
- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools
- Chicago Public Schools
- Cleveland Metropolitan School District
