PoW taking place: math problem-solving moment of the week
"Even though it is highly improbable that the coastline of the lake is vertical, making a constant surface area possible, I will assume that to be the case. This problem would require much more information otherwise. Sorry if this is pedantic." - Jasper, highlighted in the Geometry PoW's Latest Solution

CORE MATH TOOLS
http://www.nctm.org/coremathtools Core Math Tools is a collection of interactive and dynamic software tools for algebra and functions, geometry, and statistics and probability.
Based upon work supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF), this free Java software is appropriate for use with any high school mathematics curriculum and compatible with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for Mathematics in terms of content and mathematical practices.
The NCTM annual meeting featured several presentations dedicated to Core Math Tools. NCTM's web pages for the suite include focused explorations, problem-based lessons, data sets, how-to pages, and more.
To get started with Core Math Tools, download it from NCTM by clicking

Now taking place: math education conversation of the hour
"When I taught college freshmen, I did not check HW and sure enough, most of those who (by observation) were not doing the HW, failed and dropped out. Letting my HS'ers fail is not an option I want to experiment with. I would rather not check HW, but fear keeps me at it. :-("
