Some subscribers to Math-Learn might be interested in a recent
discussion-list post
"Remediation for Remedial Math #2 - Response to 'Haim' " The abstract reads:

ABSTRACT: In response to my post "Remediation for Remedial Math #2"

"Dewey (1899) (yes, that would be the 19th century) wrote

make plain the typical points of the old education: its passivity of
attitude, its mechanical massing of children, its uniformity of
curriculum and method. It may be summed up by stating that the centre
of gravity is outside the child. It is in the teacher, the textbook,
anywhere and everywhere you please except in the immediate instincts
and activities of the child himself.' In that one passage is every
hoary idea that still animates the undead cadaver of education
theory: discovery learning, relevance to the life of the child,
child-centered education, active learning, etc. Richard, you
complain of inertia? As well you should. But it is not exactly what
you think."
"Haim's" impoverished understanding of education dates at least back
to Hogarth's <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Hogarth> "Scholars
at a Lecture"

(yes, that would be the 18th century). "HAIM,",YOU COMPLAIN OF
INERTIA? AS WELL YOU SHOULD. BUT IT IS NOT EXACTLY WHAT YOU THINK.
