Maxima variable names and (la)tex

I'm new to maxima, and find the tex() function for rendering expressions in (la)tex very useful.

I'd like to name my scalar variables so that they are rendered with subscripts in the tex output: e.g. I'd like to get "Z_0" output in the tex for one of my variables. If I name my variable "Z_0", maxima escapes the underscore in the tex output and gives "Z\_0", which isn't helpful.

Is there a way to do this?

Thanks

-Stu
