"The Founding Fathers were some of the greatest liberals and progressives in the history of the US - in going from the Articles of Confederation to the US Constitution they created the greatest increase in the size and scope of central government in the entire history of the US."

ok. I'll bite.

Before the Constitution, some states allowed women to vote, but to join the union, they had to remove the right of women to vote? Is that how you define "liberal"?

"Were our State a pure democracy . . .

there would yet be excluded from their deliberations . . .

women, who, to prevent depravation of morals and ambiguity of issue, should not mix promiscuously in the public meetings of men."

They considered Blacks to be animals and NEVER would have allowed them to vote. Is that how you define "liberal"?

""But as this would be no punishment or change of condition to slaves (me miserum!) let them be sent to other countries. By these means we should be freed from the wickedness of the latter, & the former would be living monuments of public vengeance."

"Among the Romans, emancipation required but one effort. The slave when made free might mix with, without staining the blood of his master. But with us a second effort is necessary, unknown to history. When freed he is to be removed beyond the reach of mixture."

"Negros are three fifths of a human being."

"But my neighbors having made good crops, I am not disheartened. The first step towards the recovery of our lands is to find substitutes for corn & bacon. I count on potatoes, clover, & sheep. The two former to feed every animal on the farm except my negroes, & the latter to feed them, diversified with rations of salted fish & molasses, both of them wholesome, agreeable, & cheap articles of food""

They called Mexicans "Mexicans" and took up arms against them and denied them citizenship--Alberto Gonzalez was the first Mexican to hold high office after 2 1/2 centuries. Is that "liberal"?

They used a *government* courthouse as a CHURCH!! GASP!! CHOKE.. "liberal"?

"In our village of Charlottesville, there is a good degree of religion, with a small spice only of fanaticism. We have four sects, but without either church or meeting-house. The court-house is the common temple, one Sunday in the month to each. Here, Episcopalian and Presbyterian, Methodist and Baptist, meet together, join in hymning their Maker, listen with attention and devotion to each others' preachers, and all mix in society with perfect harmony."

They included the word CHRISTIAN in state constitutions!! Do you know even ONE liberal today who wouldn't have a heart attack if you even *hinted* at it?

"That religion or the duty which we owe to our Creator, and the manner of discharging it, can be directed only by reason and conviction, not by force or violence; and, therefore, all men are equally entitled to the free exercise of religion, according to the dictates of conscience; and that it is the mutual duty of all to practice Christian forbearance, love, and charity towards each other."

What they proposed as a "free" public education was TWO OR THREE YEARS, not an "education" that turns students into welfare basket cases who can't even earn enough money to pay the INTEREST on their student loans. Sounds like extremist conservatism to me. Can you even imagine if a politician tried that TODAY?
