Mac sound conversion (help!)

I would like to use Macintosh format sound samples in Matlab. However,
there is no "macsound-read" like command in matlab's DSP toolbox, and my
macintosh does not sample using a sun-au or windows WAV format. I would
really like to be able to sample a sound directly from a CD or microphone
at 44.1kHz, and then use Matlab for filtering/manipulation of the sample.

Does anyone have any tried-and-true methods for sampling sound with a
macintosh for matlab manipulation? Actually, a soundfile conversion
program would be really handy. Can anyone out there recommend such
software? I would prefer to stay in the shareware/freeware domain, but if
you've had really great results with a more expensive package, please let
me know!

Thank you (plenty!) in advance,

Jonathan Berry
