Minimizing of multivariable function

Hallo
Please excuse me if my question is not appropriate for this group, this is
my first posting here and I am a matlab novice.
My question: I am looking for a PD package for minimizing functions of more
than one variables. (Something like steepest descent or CG.) If this does
not exist can perhaps some kind soul give me any hints on how to do this?
I use Matlab for prototyping Fortran code, this means (at least if it is not
_too slow_ than performance is not a very important issue.
Another question (perhaps really stupid):
I think having a separate file for each of my own functions is quite annoying.
Is there a way to put multiple functions in one file?
