We were discussing the recent article stating that algebra should not be taught, at least as it is now, and to whom it is now, in our high schools and colleges. There was then a follow-up that said the comments in that article were incorrect. (I'm sorry I don't have the old emails handy to be more precise.)
Anyway that second article stated that welders use trig and algebra. I said they didn't.
I received this private correction, and feel I need to share it (I haven¹t seen it posted.)
> It truly depends on what they are welding and piping can especially be very > intricate. Their apprenticeship has not just "how to weld", but a great deal > of math, including trig and algebra. Some welding in the pharmaceutical > industry is extremely difficult and not just welding. Yes, the engineers > design it, but when it does not fit in the field, it usually is the welder who > comes up with a solution and has to make the calculations to make it work.
And I want to thank my colleague for this information. I was off base.
