Viewing/Printing figures generated by MATLAB

I have a problem trying to view or print figures that I have generated with MATLAB 4.2.1c on a Mac Quadra 630.
It seems that the .ps files that I create with the file_plot command (appending figures generated in MATLAB to a file) are unreadable by any programs that are normally used for viewing printing .ps files. I have tried importing into various applications (MS Word, ClarisDraw) and been unsuccessful, getting variuous errors indicating the file did not have EPS format. I have viewed the properties of the file using Norton Utilities Disk Editor and found that indeed it does have the EPSF file type and MATLAB as the creator.
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
