Multiculturalism is a multifaceted phenomenon, so the reasons for its failure must be multifarious. One reason that should not be overlooked is garden variety stupidity. Multiculturalism is a very stupid ideology. To get a proper feel for the texture of that stupidity, this forum may like to examine the following.
So, the Southern Poverty Law Center is a fairly well known racket. One of their favorite "cons" is the teaching of tolerance,

Here, for your delectation, is a play for small children published by the SPLC. I would have to think about this a bit more, but off hand I would say this is probably the single stupidest thing I have ever seen,

In order to reach its moral, that hatred and misunderstanding among children (and, ultimately, in society) is taught, and therefore can be untaught, by their parents, the SPLC must violate several facts of nature.
The central question in this "pourquoi of prejudice" is why do frog children and snake children not play together. So, the first major fact that is violated is that snakes eat frogs---a show stopper from the frogs' pont of view, one might think.
After that, of course, there are the inconvenient facts that frogs and snakes do not form families, that snakes cannot shake hands. In fact, I wonder if frogs and snakes even speak the same language.
In other words, to achieve tolerance or the semblance of tolerance, the SPLC must construct out of whole cloth an entirely new universe, entirely at odds with the known universe, in which up is down and black is white and almost every law of nature, in this universe, must be violated. No doubt, this alternate universe is a lovely place. Too bad nobody can live there.
Finally, it must be observed that if this is the sort of idiocy that occupies the time of elementary school children in the U.S., one need look no farther for reasons American students perform so poorly compared to the East Asians.
When it comes to education among the East Asians, I am reminded of an early scene in the movie "Apocalypse Now", in which Captain Willard (Martin Sheen) watches American troops watching a USO show and thinks to himself,

In other words, the East Asians are taking care of business while we intellectually abuse our children, mercilessly and relentlessly.
