H F Dodges 1943 paper A Sampling Plan for Continuous Production

I am having difficulty in understanding how Dodge has derived formulas 6 and 7. See attached pdf for a copy of his paper.

Why does he take the derivative of the sum of the probabilities? Would some one explain this or direct to a good text on the topic.
