Sad News: Prof. Hirokazu Okamori [Japan]

Professor Hirokazu Okamori, professor emeritus of Osaka Kyoiku
University and noted Japanese researcher in mathematics education,
passed away Sunday, July 22, 2012. Professor Okamori had been in and
out of the hospital due to liver ailment in recent years.
Most recently Professor Okamori was cited in a new book on knot
theory that grew out of his meeting with Professor Akio Kawauchi of
Osaka City University, an expert in knot theory. Due to their
meeting, a project was begun in 2004 to introduce knot theory to
education. Together with Tomoko Yanagimoto, the team began discussion
of introducing knot theory into education and carried out work aimed
at developing teaching materials for elementary and junior and high
school students.
The work culminated in a new book in English on knot theory edited by
Professors Kawauchi and Yanagimoto (2011): Teaching and Learning of
Knot Theory in School Mathematics. [up-to-date topics in knot theory,
educational meaning of knot theory in the evolution of mathematics
education, methodology for introducing knot theory into curriculum
and actual examples of teaching practices and research conducted at
the elementary, junior and senior high school levels and general
