some old C-code of mine which used to work reading mat-files now
no longer does. I'm guessing something about the structure of the
mat-file has changed. I don't think the structure defined in the
External Interface Guide is valid any more.

Can I get some info on the structure of the mat-file? I'm using
matlab 4.2c on a DEC-ALPHA.

I know it's not recommended to write my own code for reading and
writing mat files but I don't have a choice.
