I need to write a SLO for PreCalculus (in addition to one for Algebra). I'm
looking for some advice from other teachers who are also doing this. I have
seen the sample SLO for PreCalc on engageny. This teacher is giving a
pretest similar to the final exam and the SLO is based on results of the
final exam. No details were given about how the final exam will be written
or graded.

I have not given an final exam in PreCalc since 1999. I realized that
juniors took it seriously but the second semester seniors just blew it off.
Pass rates were awful. Few students did review. One student told me he
could get a 30 on the final exam and still pass the course. I switched to a
project based final exam in 2000 and have done one every year since then.
http://www.ccsdk12.org/mclemens/projects/PreCalcFinal/finalprj.htm The
students were engaged. Even the seniors put forth their best effort since
the project was presented to the class. Now I have to go back to a written
test.

I am the only teacher in my district teaching PreCalc. Someone else has to
write the exam and grade it. Realistically it probably has to be another
teacher in my school (he is going to be SO happy to have this added to his
final weeks workload). PreCalc curriculums vary so widely from district to
district that a regional exam seems unlikely to be appropriate. Anyone else
in St Lawrence County writing a SLO for PreCalc? I haven't talked to anyone
anywhere yet. Most teachers are covered by just the regents exams.

So please write me (mclemens@ccsdk12.org) if you are writing a PreCalc SLO
or pass this on to another teacher if you know someone who is. I'd
appreciate it.

Thanks
