Thank you indeed Martin, I understand that, and now have it expressed in Latex. I will now insert the definition in the paper.
In answer to your question, yes, there are a number of actively developed variants of Apl. I write in a number of array based languages including Maple, Matlab and LabVIEW, but AplX from MicroApl is my favourite  it is multitasking, can generate standalone GUIs, and talk to FPGAs, so I use it for my NMR instrumentation control and data analysis.
