running matlab in background (unix)

Hi all. This may be a trivial question but I have not been able to figure out how to run matlab in the background under unix. I have setup a startup.m file and the last command in it is quit. It runs fine interactively but as soon as I put the process in the background matlab expects some input from the screen (tty suspended).
Does anyone have ideas on how to fix this?
thanks a bunch
