I agree that basics are important, not the specifics. What is this "changing economy needs specific skills"? I don't believe it. I am a "Software Engineer", cum "Maths guy". I have strong basics, and I can learn whatever is necessary. I can survive much better in a pressing economy than others with just specific skills.
Mapping from IBM back to studies just lures students, but does not give them what they need.
