fgetl misses first characters

I'm trying to read in an ASCII file with . as missing data using
fgetl. For example:

1 2 3 . 5 6
4 2 . 5 7 8
etc.

when I use fgetl(fid) the first line reads well, but the
second line is usually missing the first three numbers. This
only happens when I am using a .m file.

Is there a way around this (or an easier way to read this type of
file in)?
