PoW taking place: math problem-solving moment of the week
"I couldn't find any possibilities. So I already knew the answer was no. But to help prove that point, I did a little extra math to prove what I just said. First I used the formula...."

Now taking place: math education conversation of the day
"By March, the students were able to figure out the question to the problem without it being present. When they were noticing and wondering, they began to notice the answer, which blew me away! By April, their explanations were close to perfect, giving great detail on how they solved the problem and even using correct math vocabulary. The students went from hating them to loving them! This program took a group of struggling math achievers last year and helped them tremendously. I believe it helped them make gains much quicker over conventional teaching methods. At the beginning of the year, the students were 18 percent proficient or advanced on the open ended responses on the math 4Sight Benchmarks. By May, the students rose to 88 percent. I believe that the consistency of using the Problems of the Week is the main reason for the rise." - Laura, featured in the Teachers' Corner of PoWerful Ideas

ESTIMATION 180
http://www.estimation180.com/
Each day of the school year, Andrew Stadel presents his middle school students with an estimation challenge. Last month, he started sharing their number sense-making online.
Check out his "Estimate of the Week" on the estimation180.com home page -- and join the challenge by looking at the picture and submitting your own estimate online. Make sure to explain your reasoning ("What context clues did you use?") and rate your accuracy ("How confident are you?"). Then check back for the video answers.
Stadel also blogs "about my interactions with math, logic, life, teaching, and the web they spin together." Posts at "Divisible by 3," which date back to March, include "Estimation vs. guessing Part 2," "PEMDAS song," "3 Act Presentation to K-8 staff," and "Rolling Tires":
