This problem occurs in two ways:

1) If I have a matrix with one column of big numbers and one column of
small numbers, Matlab will put a "1.0e+003*" at the top, and scale
accordingly--meaning the small numbers show up as zeros, or with only
one significant digit.

2) On a plot, quite frequently, Matlab will do a similar thing if I
have big numbers on the axis (even just 5 digits). It will put a 10^4
at the end of the axis, and then only one or two digits at each tick.

How can I control Matlab's behaviour in the above?

Thanks!
-Paul
