You suspect wrong and betray a supercilious ignorance common to many US citizens. We do have a 'system of free or nearly free medical care'. It's not 'Medicare'; but a system wherein treatment at 'government-run' hospitals is, for nearly all practical purposes, in principle, free. The system does not operate effectively - and THAT is the real problem - and I suspect the real difficulty with 'Medicare' may well be that it is not operated effectively.

If you would take the small trouble to look up the word 'socialism' in a dictionary, and also take the small trouble find out what 'Medicare' is, you will no doubt be amazed to discover that:

'Medicare' DOES NOT = 'socialism'!!!

IMHO, it would greatly benefit you to try to learn to use your own language, 'US English', with a minimum degree of precision and care. (While you're about it, you may also like to find out the meaning, in appropriate contexts, of the word "equitable").

As to "everyone paying their own way" - it is for US citizens (and their elected government) to figure out the right and equitable route to provide health care for citizens.
