New Ph.D. Program: Johns Hopkins University

Dear colleague:
I want to let you know about a new interdisciplinary PhD program that
the Johns Hopkins University School of Education (SOE) will be
launching in fall 2013.* We are very excited about this new venture
and hope that you will encourage your graduates and/or graduating
Master's Degree candidates to apply. Interested students can find

A new approach to educational research is required to meet the
educational challenges of the 21st century in that research must help
solve problems of practice and inform the policies needed to scale
and support evidence based practices. Achieving this will require
both an interdisciplinary perspective and the integration of
research, practice and policy. This new Doctor of Philosophy in
Education program is designed to prepare an exceptional core of
interdisciplinary scholars to address the many policy and practice
challenges associated with improving preK-12 student outcomes in
high-risk school communities.
The full-time program examines the multiple and complex obstacles to
improving student achievement by broadening the scope of factors that
are typically thought to influence educational outcomes. To this
end, the program is designed to prepare top scholars in education
research and policy who possess the analytical capabilities for
identifying problems and crafting solutions beyond one academic
discipline. Students are able to draw upon the intellectual resources
from across the Johns Hopkins community, which provides an
extraordinary learning environment that promotes multidisciplinary
collaboration among students and distinguished scholars. Program
graduates are equipped to assume roles as university faculty,
researchers, or leaders in policy making.

Financial Assistance
. 100% tuition
. $25,000 annual stipend to support full-time study
The priority deadline for this program is April 1, 2013; applications
will be accepted thereafter on a space available basis until the
