When you're editing your followup, simply locate the Subject line, by typing: /^Subject:
This will position your cursor at the beginning of that line. Then, go to the first word of the subject itself, by typing W
After that, enter your new subject by typing the letter "i" followed by whatever you want the new text to be, and then " [Was: ". When you've done this, hit the ESCAPE key. Since brackets need to be closed, type "]A", again followed by the ESCAPE key.
Easy-peasy!
