PoW taking place: math problem-solving moment of the week
"When I first saw the problem I noticed it didn't really have any numbers, which is something I'm not used to. I'm used to the problem giving me numbers and I plug them in and get the answer. I found this a little difficult at first.... I got frustrated until this light bulb went off in my mind." - Desmond, highlighted in the Algebra PoW's Latest Solution

STELLA'S STUNNERS
http://ohiorc.org/for/math/stella/
Throughout his 21 years of teaching, Rudd Crawford collected non-routine mathematics problems that lacked any "hints as to what methods or skills will be needed to solve them." The Ohio Resource Center hosts a library of more than 600 "Stunners" from Crawford -- the Buckeye State's 1984 winner of a Presidential Awardee for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) -- organized into
- Pre-Algebra - Algebra I - Geometry - Algebra II/Trigonometry - Pre-Calculus
New to Stunners? Try your hand at this introductory set:

For ideas on implementing these challenges in your classroom, check out Crawford's reflections on how he used Stella in his:

Supporting materials include the essay "What Students Gain From Problem Solving" and "Some Helpful Problem-Solving Heuristics," a list of 25 tips adapted from a book by S. P. Meiring:

Now taking place: math education conversation of the day
"I'm trying to put together a list of free videos for adult education teachers to demonstrate the use of various math manipulatives primarily for teaching arithmetic or pre-algebra. The videos do not have to show the manipulatives being used with adult learners, but if they do, so much the better. If an already constructed list is available or there are specific videos that you think are worthwhile, please send me the URLs." - Fred, posted to the mathedcc discussion
