Reports in a GUI

I'm trying to include reports in some of my projects. I've read through a lot of the information and viewed the webinars but cannot find the answer to my question. And that is how do I get the data from my application, GUI-based, into the report? Almost every webinar shows predefined data or functions that are used in the report. Or it doesn't show how to implement the data into the report.

I see that the reports contain tables, and functions, and etc. And I know that you can include the report in the program. However, how does the data get into the report if the data basically changes every time the application is run? Do you call the report using variables sent to the report? Or do you save the data in a Global variable? Or do you save data to a mat file? Is there a right way or a wrong way to do this?

I really wish there was some additional documentation on this feature. It was one of the reasons I purchased MatLab and it just seems like it is an ignored aspect. For instance, formatting seems almost non existent. I expected to be able to format my reports so they would look similar to a Word or Excel report.
